Boeng Kak Families Protest for More Land Titles
About 100 residents of Phnom Penh’s Boeng Kak area protested in front of City Hall yesterday to demand that 58 more families be given titles to homes from which they are being evicted. In August, Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered that a 12.44-hectare section of the community be cut out of a real estate project being headed by CPP Senator Lao Meng Khin, and that the families living inside the area be given land titles. When Daun Penh district officials handed out the last of 638 titles last week, they said every family eligible for a title under the prime minister’s order had been accounted for. But the families of Boeng Kak, including those with titles, say 58 of them were arbitrarily excluded. …
